Landscapes of dense vegetation and towering trees can easily create eerie and mysterious natural settings, ideal for several film genres. Contemporary Greek cinema makes use of nature landscapes to create unique cinematic moments. In “Digger” (2020) by Tzortzis Grigorakis, an idiosyncratic anti-heroic western, awarded with 10 “Iris” awards, the mountainous Halkidiki hosts the personal impasses of the heroes. Accordingly, the forest of Foloi, near ancient Olympia, becomes the scene of the drama for the “Flock of Sheep” (2021) by Dimitris Kanellopoulos, as does the area around the Victorian Parknasilla Hotel in the Irish South, which was transformed into the Forest of the Lonely for the dystopian “Lobster” (2015) by Giorgos Lanthimos.
Pictured above, is the stone-built village of Kastaneri. Hidden in chestnut forests, on the slopes of Mount Paikos, Kastaneri is only 10 kilometers away from Goumenissa and it welcomes visitors all year round.
