Central Macedonia reinforces its European presence in sustainable filmmaking through the Green SCAP program, as the first international workshop concludes in Venice and preparations begin for Thessaloniki.
With sustainability at the core of film production design, the first in-person workshop of the European program Green SCAP (Green Skills for Cinema and Audiovisual Production) was successfully completed from 6 to 8 February 2026 at San Servolo, Venice.
The Film Office–Central Macedonia actively participated as a project partner in the three-day workshop, contributing to the development of new “green” standards for the European audiovisual industry.
The workshop, entitled “From Theory to Practice: Sustainability in the Design of an Audiovisual Project,” focused on the practical implementation of environmental management tools for the development of sustainability plans for film productions. Through intensive hands-on sessions, twelve selected professionals from Greece, Italy and Spain collaborated with internationally acclaimed trainers to develop sustainable audiovisual projects, analysing each stage of the production process through the lens of environmental responsibility.
The trainers of the first Green SCAP workshop were Claudio Savelli (Sustainability Manager), Serena Alfieri (Film Producer), and Linnea Merzagora (Project manager of the European Green Film network / Trentino Film Commission).
“The international outreach of our Region is being significantly strengthened, as our first European project dedicated exclusively to the audiovisual sector is now a reality. The Green SCAP project on sustainability in film productions demonstrates that Central Macedonia is not only an attractive filming destination, but also an institutional actor pioneering training on the contemporary challenges of the industry. Following the outstanding experience in Venice, we are now intensively preparing for our next milestone in March: the workshop in Thessaloniki, where we will have the opportunity to showcase in practice the dynamic potential of our region as a filming destination that actively encourages sustainable creation,” stated the Vice Governor for Tourism, Mrs Vicky Chatzivasileiou.
The Green SCAP program now passes the organisational baton to Greece next month. The Film Office–Central Macedonia, in collaboration with the Hellenic Film Commission of the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center (EKKOMED), is preparing to welcome partners and participants to Thessaloniki this coming March.
This second in-person Green SCAP workshop, to be held with the support of the Agora of the 28th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, will mark the next crucial step of the program. The Thessaloniki workshop will focus on the implementation of best green practices and on further connecting regional professionals with the emerging challenges of sustainable filmmaking.
Green SCAP is implemented within the framework of Erasmus+ and is co-funded by the European Union. The lead partner is Veneto Film Commission (Italy), in collaboration with the Film Office–Central Macedonia, the Hellenic Film Commission of the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center (EKKOMED), and the Mediterranean Creative Hub of Mallorca (Spain), under the scientific supervision of the European Green Film network/Trentino Film Commission.
In Central Macedonia, the European project GREEN SCAP is implemented through the collaboration of the Film Office–Central Macedonia, the Directorate of Tourism, and the Department of European Programs and Partnerships of the Independent Directorate for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Support of the Region of Central Macedonia.
