The European Film Academy (EFA) has just added the White Tower to its list of the Treasures of European Film Culture. At the location of this historical monument of our cultural heritage, there was an older tower belonging to Thessaloniki’s Byzantine
fortifications, referred to as the Byzantine Lion Tower in the 16th century. An emblematic landmark of Thessaloniki, the White Tower has been internationally recognized as a cinematic place in the film of Theo Angelopoulos “Landscape in the Mist” (1988), which established Thessaloniki as a film location abroad, through the films of the acclaimed Greek film auteur.
